The SEO makeover
I began by asking Google what’s changed about Google searches in the past decade and what’s changing now. Is good old SEO going out of fashion?
It started with a technical spiel. But eased over time and repeated efforts of course.
To understand how search is changing, think of Google as a business that has upgraded its business model.
For twenty years,Google acted like a traditional Mall Directory. If you walked up to the directory board and looked for “shoes,” it pointed you to five different stores. It was up to you to walk into those stores, browse the shelves, and find your answer. Traditional SEO was the art of making sure your storefront was the biggest, brightest, and closest to the mall entrance.
Today,Google has pivoted into a Personal Concierge. When you ask for shoes, the concierge doesn’t point you to the stores. Instead, they run into the stores for you, grab the best shoes, bring them back to the lobby, and say, “Here are the top options based on what you need, and here is a quick summary of why they fit.”
For a marketing professional, here is exactly what this shift means for your brand.
1. The Death of the “Click” (The Drive-Thru Effect)
In the past, success meant getting a user to click a link and land on your website. Google is AI powered now.

•
The search has transformed into ask.
-
•
The Marketing Shift: You are still providing the value, but you have to stop measuring success only by website traffic. Instead, you need to measure Brand Impression—ensuring that when Google hands over the answer to your ask, your brand’s name is stamped there.
2. From “Keywords” to “Conversations”
Thinking has changed from key words. Today, because users can type full, conversational sentences or ask follow-up questions, Google looks for concepts, context, and real human expertise.
-
•
It’s a paradox but in the world powered by AI, AI content gets a thumbs down.
-
•
The Marketing Shift: Stop writing content to satisfy a computer code. Write content that answers nuanced, real-world consumer dilemmas.
3. SEO Isn’t Dying, it’s slowly transforming into digital PR
“Good old SEO” was highly technical—fixing code, adjusting metadata, and tweaking backend tags. While technical health still matters, modern search engines care much more about your brand’s overall reputation across the entire internet.

•
Google’s AI is moving from key words to seeing where the content is mentioned – news forums, events, awards – it’s looking for mentions.

The Marketing Shift:SEO is no longer an isolated IT task. It is now a core part ofBrand Authority. To rank well today, your brand needs to be mentioned, reviewed, and cited organically across the web. You optimize reputation and authenticity.
The Bottom Line for Marketers
You don’t need to learn a single line of code to win at search today. Your goal is simply to be the best answer in your industry. If your website provides genuinely unique insights, clear data, and authentic expert opinions, Google’s AI concierge will continue to borrow your products and praise your name to the customer.
